Description:A survey was taken at Industrial Products Factory, Goodyear Tire and Rubber Company, (SIC-3011) Akron, Ohio, to determine worker exposure to N-nitroso compounds, especially with regard to airborne volatile nitrosamines in the rubber (9006046) industry. Area air samples were pumped through a vacuum trap containing 45ml of 1 N KOH solution at a flow rate of 1.5 to 20l/min. for 3 hours. The sample was loaded onto a Jetube perimpregnated with 15ml dichloromethane (75092). GC/TEA (66400) conditions were used for volatile nitrosamine detection. HPLC/TEA was constructed by sequentially connecting a high pressure pump, an injector, a Lichrosorb Si60 column, and a thermal energy analysis (TEA). Solvent systems used included 100% acetone (67641), 50% acetone and 50% isooctane (540841), and 25% acetone and 75% isooctane. N-nitroso compound was not detected in any bulk samples at a detection limit of 0.5 micrograms/g. The carcinogen N-nitrosodimethylamine (62759) was identified by HPLC/TEA and confirmed by GC/TEA in all samples. [Description provided by NIOSH]
