  The draft technical standards and the supporting documentation for exposure to cresol (1319773) approved by the Joint Review Committee of the NIOSH/OSHA Standards Completion Program are presented. Recommendations are made to the Department of Labor for its consideration in rulemaking and have no legal status until final regulations are approved. Methods for the determination of exposure and their degrees of accuracy are given. The permissible exposure level for cresol is set at 5ppm in airborne concentrations, averaged over an 8 hour period. Methods for medical examinations and surveillance of workers, including types of clinical tests and the frequency at which they should be administered are given. Necessary personal protective equipment includes items for eye protection, skin protection, and respiratory protection. Employer obligations for injury due to exposure are discussed.
