Description:In a NIOSH sponsored industrial hygiene survey of vinyl-fluoride (75025) (VF) and vinyl-bromide (593602) (VBr), surveys were conducted at vinyl-fluoride manufacturing and polymerization factories, and at a vinyl-bromide manufacturing factory over periods of three work shifts in each factory between March and June, 1977. Eight air samples were taken in the VF manufacturing plant to determine plant operator exposure levels during normal production; these levels were found to be less than 2ppm for seven of the eight samples. However, these results were complicated by interference from difluoroethane (75376) (DFE), which was fed to VF production from storage tanks. DFE exposure levels were less than 3ppm for four samples and 5ppm for one sample. Also, one sample was measured at 21ppm VF for one operator during the start up shift. Eleven air samples taken from the polymerization plant revealed VF exposures ranging from 1 to 5ppm, with an average TWA exposure of 1.9ppm VF. Median worker exposures at the VBr manufacturing factory were found to be 0.27ppm VBr and 0.08ppm ethylene-dibromide (106934) for the VBr plant operators based on four samples; 0.40ppm VBr and 0.26ppm ethylene-dibromide for the lab technician; and 1.2ppm VBr and sample. A 1 hour sample showed an exposure level of 6.3ppm VBr while a shipping crewman was loading a tank car. It is noted that while acute health effects are not usually encountered at the concentrations found in the study, the effects of chronic exposure to these concentrations are not well known. Based on the results of air samples and inspection of the factories, improved industrial hygiene practices are recommended for each factory. [Description provided by NIOSH]
