Description:It is believed that worker injuries are related to the quantity of energy absorbed in the upper extremities while working with vibrating tools. Thus, in this field investigation concerning 257 persons, rock drillers, chiselers, and grinders, a method of recording the energy absorbed was developed. The results show that the energy absorption per unit time is correlated to injury frequency. For this reason and other theoretical considerations, it is maintained that the energy absorbed per unit time seems to be an etiologic factor of prime importance. The latent period before symptoms appeared was roughly the same for each of the three groups, 8-9 years. There were significant differences in the temporary threshold shift for vibration perception after exposure between persons with and without subjective symptoms for drillers and chiselers.
