  The organization of the zinc industry is discussed with details given on mining, milling, smelting, and refining of zinc by various processes. The geology of major deposits are described. Environmental and economic factors in the industry are given. World mine and smelter data have been tabulated since 1950 to indicate trends in world production. The United States was the largest producer of zinc metal from 1901 to 1971, but has lost this position as smelters closed. Since 1951, U.S. production has shifted from the Western States to the Eastern States, with the result that a higher proportion of zinc is being extracted from zinc ores rather than mixed ores. The use of zinc as a metal, dust, and in compounds is described. U.S. demand is expected to grow at an annual rate of about 2 percent to the year 2000. After about 1990 zinc batteries for automobile propulsion and electrical load leveling could become important. [Description provided by NIOSH]
