Description:Interest in mining coal from the United States' vast highwall reserves has recently been revitalized, and current research results will permit recovery of such reserves to be accomplished safely. A significant number of new high-wall mining systems have appeared or are on the verge of being introduced. Common virtues of the new systems include (1) safe operation, because no workers are permitted in the mined workings and protective structures are often provided for workers based on the bench, (2) high coal recovery ratios on the order of 60 to 85 pct, (3) deep highwall penetration up to 2,000 ft, (4) mining operations typically requiring a crew of only three to five workers (this contributes to high productivity figures, with 22 st per employee-hour having been teleoperated systems demonstrated), and (5) the expanded recovery of coal reserves that were once considered not minable.
