Description:The increased use of mechanical mining equipment coupled with the development of gassier coal seams has led to a reported increase in the annual frequency of methane ignitions by friction in American coal mines. Ignitions on longwall sections have shown a steady increase over the past two decades, more or less matching the growth in longwall utilization in the United States. Several remedial measures have been identified for controlling frictional ignitions. Two of these, improved cutter bits and directed water sprays, have been successfully applied in operating U.S. coal mines. These two methods are discussed in some detail with emphasis on their application in longwall mining. [Description provided by NIOSH]
