Description:The U.S. Bureau of Mines and the Illinois mine subsidence insurance fund are currently cooperating on a long-term program of analysis of subsidence data over abandoned-mine subsidence events. The importance of the horizontal component of ground movement, especially differential horizontal movement, is recognized, and the need to relate this motion to structural response is being studied. If successful repair of structures during the period of residual subsidence is to take place, a better understanding of mine void failure, differential horizontal movement, tilt, curvature, and the time-dependent complexities of movements within the mine subsidence event must be known. We are many years away from being able to predict exactly when and where an abandoned mine subsidence event will occur; therefore, effective mitigation and repair techniques must be developed, and the possibility of introducing practical zoning or building codes should be seriously considered.
