Description:The major technique for monitoring ground movements caused by active and abandoned mines in Illinois is by level survey. This technique is used to monitor the growth and duration of mine subsidence events to determine when structural repairs can safely begin. Because surveying is costly over long periods of time, several alternative, less costly monitoring techniques are under investigation by the U.S. Bureau of Mines in cooperation with the Illinois Mine Subsidence Insurance Fund (IMSIF). New survey guidelines adopted by the IMSIF and procedures for monitoring subsidence events in urban areas of Illinois are presented. Three case histories are discussed to illustrate the suggested survey guidelines and monitoring methods. The first case is a mine subsidence event that occurred over an abandoned coal mine and illustrates the need for long-term economic monitoring techniques. The second case describes a mine subsidence event in an urban area over an abandoned coal mine where the development of a new subsidence event adjacent to other active events was monitored. The third case describes two experimental foundations that were built, instrumented, and monitored for 3 years over an active high-extraction coal mine. [Description provided by NIOSH]
