  • Description:
Sulfonamide drugs have proven to be effective antibacterial agents in many food-producing animals. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has set the tolerance level for the resultant residues in uncooked edible tissues at 0.1 Ppm. A rapid screening method to detect these drugs was developed to prevent gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (gc-ms) confirmation analysis of an excessive number of false positive and false negative samples. The method provides the ability to monitor multiple sulfonamides simultaneously at the tolerance level with a degree of accuracy of precision. The two most significant factors responsible for these characteristics are the internal standard and the preadsorbent spotting zone. For laboratories without access to a gc-ms instrument or a need for confirmatory information, the technique is sufficiently accurate and sensitive to function as the determination procedure. Since 18 to 24 samples can be analyzed completely per day, the procedure offers the added benefit of high sample throughput. [Description provided by NIOSH]
