Description:This abstract discusses computerized methods designed for the calculation of gravitational stress exerted on a lithologic unit by a mass of overlying strata (oveburden stress). The method involves the manipulation of two data files containing geographic location coordinates and elevation information for a given study area. The first data file contains digital elevation model (dem) data, which provide the topograhic elevations for the study area. A second data file contains elevation values for the surface of a lithologic unit at depth, generated from information obtained from available maps, field measurements, and drill hole data, or by mathematical simulation of the surface. A gridding program interpolates values between points of known elevation to generate an array of elevations in a grid format matching that of the dem data. The computer program for stress calculation involves subtraction of the elevation values in the data files to obtain overburden thickness. Stress vectors are calculated from overburden thickness for each grid point on the subsurface unit. The stress calculation options are direct vertical overburden pressure and the determination of stresses based upon a "cone-of-influence" from overlying topography where variations in the nearby terrain are taken into account.
