Description:Selectivity in sulfide flotation arises from the nature of the interaction between collector species and the mineral surface. This takes place by a mixed potential mechanism involving separate electrochemical steps. The process that leads to a hydrophobic mineral surface is an anodic oxidation reaction that fixes the collector at the interface, and this is balanced by the cathodic reduction of oxygen. Studies carried out using solid and particulate bed electrodes have identified the hydrophobic entity as a chemisorbed species, a metal-thiol compound, or a dithiolate, depending upon the collector, the mineral, and the solution composition. Recovery potential relationships have been determined for a number of single mineral systems, and the results correlate with electrochemical studies at electrodes. Studies on mineral mixtures have shown that the recovery is influenced by other components. Depressant action generally takes place by lowering the mixed potential below the flotation edge for the mineral. Self- induced flotation is also a function of potential.
