Crude Iodine Production - a Review of Processes.

  There have been three distinct but overlapping phases in the history of iodine processing. Phase 1, which began in 1817 and continued until 1959, involved iodine production from seaweed in France, Japan, Norway, Scotland, the United States, and the U.S.S.R. Phase 2 began in 1852 as byproduct production of iodine with natural sodium nitrate in Chile. Phase 3 began in 1854 with the production of iodine from brines in Java, Indonesia, and eventually in Italy, Japan, the United States and the U.S.S.R. The production of crude iodine has experienced many technical changes over the past 175 years. The changes in processing and production during these years will be discussed.
