Description:Ceramic research in the Bureau of Mines is important because it contributes to the Bureau's mission of helping to conserve domestic resources, ensuring that U.S. Industry has a continuing and adequate supply of raw materials, and reducing the nation's dependence upon imported materials, especially those of a strategic nature. Current materials research includes substitution, development of long- service-life materials, development of improved materials for the mining and minerals processing industries, and recycling. As part of the overall materials research effort, ceramics will continue to have key roles as substitutes for critical and strategic materials, for improved resistance to corrosion and wear, and for refractories needed to withstand severe furnace environments. A major effort on nondestructive evaluation and joining technology for advanced ceramics is being conducted for the Bureau of Mines under contract. [Description provided by NIOSH]
