Description:Potash is the generic term for a variety of potassium-bearing minerals. Although not on the list of strategic and critical minerals, potash is essential in production of food and agricultural products. Potassium is an essential plant nutrient required for plant growth and used to increase plant yield. The principal source of potassium is mined potash, which includes chlorides and sulfate of potash-magnesia. About 93% of domestic potash consumption is for agricultural fertilizer. About 95% of the agricultural consumption is in the form of muriate of potash (kcl); the rest, as sulfates and nitrates. This Bureau of Mines report presents comprehensive data on potash including strategic considerations, technology trends, reserves-resources, supply-demand relationships, economic factors and problems, operating factors and problems, and outlook to 2000.
