Description:Soda ash has been used in the United States for nearly 300 years and it is not surprising that most of the end uses have reached maturity and tend to follow the population trend, which for the last several years has been leveling out. The major soda ash markets in the United States are similar to those in other industrially developed countries, namely glass, chemicals, soaps and detergents, pulp and paper, and water treatment. Most of these industries throughout the world have been affected by the general downturn in the world economy, which, in turn, has affected soda ash demand. This paper concentrates on the short-term outlook for soda ash consumption in the United States and some of the factors that will affect the availability of U.S. soda ash for export.
