Description:Since it is very similar to natural gas, methane from coal can be recovered and used as a substitute for natural gas. Research by the Bureau of Mines has demonstrated several methods of draining methane from coal, such as horizontal holes at the bottom of shafts, vertical boreholes from the surface, and vertical boreholes to gob areas. Utilization of methane drained from coalbeds depends on many factors, including the drainage method, the expected rate and duration of the drainage project, access to pipelines or other surface facilities, and market demand. The simplest and currently most popular use of coalbed methane is its direct addition to natural gas pipelines. The minable bituminous coalbeds of the United States contain an estimated 300 trillion cubic feet of methane. [Description provided by NIOSH]
