Description:The high temperatures and humidities encountered in deep mines make a comfortable and healthy work environment difficult and expensive to maintain. Therefore, large refrigeration systems are employed to condition the working air to help control temperature and humidity. The refrigeration systems can be located on the surface or underground on the working levels of the mine. Regardless of location, large quantities of water are required to be brought into the mine to operate these refrigeration systems. The large values of head and flow offer an excellent opportunity for energy recovery due to the large amount of available potential energy. This paper describes a program the Bureau of Mines has undertaken to study the feasibility of recovering this energy. [Description provided by NIOSH]
