Description:Bell Helicopter Textron, Inc., under a cooperative agreement with the Bureau of Mines, evaluated technology for the regeneration of waste chromic acid devised by the Bureau. Laboratory and pilot studies were performed to determine the applicability of electrolytic membrane cell technology to bell's process stream for the surface preparation of aluminum alloy components. The study revealed that the technology reduced chemical cost by regenerating chromic acid for reuse, reduced waste treatment costs, and reduced hazardous waste disposal costs. Bell has installed a regeneration unit based on the Bureau-developed technology in its Hurst, Texas, plant. [Description provided by NIOSH]
