USBM Surface Coal Mining Equipment Subprogram.

  The surface coal mining equipment research and development subprogram has two principal goals. The first is to develop better, more productive new equipment, and the second is to improve existing equipment used throughout the industry. At present, there are over 30 research projects either being investigated by Bureau personnel or being developed by industry under government contracts. The contract listing does not include all contracts because some ideas and concepts are being developed by multiple contract award. This paper will present background on the research approach of the subprogram, selected equipment concepts being investigated or developed, and preliminary results from two projects in the field.
