    Lithium, aluminum, and sodium are recovered from brines by addition of an aluminum salt and an alkaline reagent to precipitate the metals, followed by dissolution in hcl. The lithium is separated from aluminum and sodium in the hcl solution by sparging with gaseous hcl to precipitate al and na chlorides while leaving lithium chloride in solution. Thus, alcl3 and ca(oh)2 were added to a brine to bring the ph to 7.5. The precipitate, which contained al 7.7, Li 0.77, and na 3.6 pct, was dissolved by addition of hcl to give a ph of 0.2. Sparging with hcl gas to an acidity of 11n hcl precipitated alcl3.6H2o and nacl, giving almost complete separation of li, al, and na. [Description provided by NIOSH]
