Description:This Bureau of Mines paper reviews recent developments in the heap leaching of gold ores with dilute cyanide solution and the recovery of the gold and associated silver from the pregnant effluents by a carbon adsorption-desorption process. It describes mineralogical considerations, experimental work, field studies, and commercial operations. New process developments include the application of (1) alcohol additives to the conventional hot alkaline cyanide strip solution to enhance gold desorption from precious metal-laden activated carbon and (2) na2s precipitation of the associated silver from cyanide mill solutions as a means of reducing the inventory of carbon required for precious metal adsorption from heap leach effluents. Application of this procedure to carbon stripping effluents results in the production of low-silver bullion by subsequent electrowinning. [Description provided by NIOSH]
