Description:In situ mining is a relatively new mining technique which has been successfully used on a commercial basis to mine uranium, and has the potential to lower production costs and significantly reduce surface disturbance when compared with conventional open pit and underground mining methods. These two potential benefits have provided incentives for the U.S. Bureau of Mines to conduct research to develop this technology for copper oxide mineralization that is hosted by fractured, hardrock deposits. If successful, this mining method could be used to recover copper from small, deep, and/or low- grade deposits that are uneconomic to mine by conventional methods, and provide mineral production in a more environmentally acceptable manner. Other commodities, such as manganese, gold, and silver, also have potential to be mined by in situ methods. [Description provided by NIOSH]
