It is the purpose of this syllabus to familiarize you with the International Classification of Radiographs of Pneumoconiosis, Revised 2002 (the ILO 2000 Classification), to acquaint you with conventions observed in recording the interpretation of such radiographs, and most particular , to instruct you by definition and clinical illustration in the meaning of descriptive terms employed in the ILO Classification, To accomplish these objectives, the syllabus and the illustrative clinical radiographs are divided Into five discrete sections or subsets. Subset 1 discusses the reporting form line-by-line, section-by-section, explaining its use and illustrating the descriptive terms employed. Subset 2 identifies the sequence of steps for classifying a radiograph according to the ILO system. You are shown how to apply the knowledge gained In Subset 1 to the interpretation of a clinical radiograph. Subset 3 and Subset 5 afford you a chance to try your hand at the Classification system. Validated interpretations of the radiographs are included to provide positive feedback concerning how well you have applied your knowledge of the system. Subset 4 provides specific drills on the most difficult visual discriminations. The classification system is subjective; there is no absolute truth and minor differences among readers are to be expected. However, if your classification differs markedly from the validated Classification provided, you are urged to restudy the portions of Subsets 1 and 4 that deal with the area of disagreement. At the completion of this self-instructional course, you will be able to classify radiographs for pneumoconiosis according to the ILO 2000 classification system, and should be prepared to take the 8 Reader proficiency examination offered by NIOSH.
