Health Effects of High Dust Exposure among Workers from Milling Process Pulverization in Foundry Gold-Bars Enterprise.

  A study was undertaken of the dust exposure experienced by gold miners. This study involved groups of workers from above and underground jobs using the oldest to the most modern extraction and industrial processes. In particular 48 workers who were exposed to high levels of breathable dust particles were examined. They were exposed at concentrations about five times the permissible levels. The X-ray results demonstrated 62% to be normal, with 38% abnormal for those having less than 10 years exposure. For those with over 10 years of exposure, 15.7% of the results were normal and 82.3% abnormal. Spirometric study results for those with less than 10 years exposure revealed 28.5% normal films and 71.5% abnormal films. For those with more than 10 years exposure, 11.1% were normal and 78.3% abnormal. Of the abnormal results 44.4% were pure obstructive syndrome, 16.6% pure restrictive syndrome, and 27.7% mixed lung function. Of those who did not smoke 51.4% had normal X-ray results and 48.6% demonstrated abnormal films. Lung function test results demonstrated no specificity and only the X-ray results together with occupational history of work exposure was of diagnostic value. [Description provided by NIOSH]
