  A NIOSH method for the analysis of trace metals in air is presented. The entire procedure, based on filter collection and subsequent atomic absorption spectrophotometry (AAS), is detailed. The range and sensitivity of the method for each metal is given. Possible interferences in AAS are noted. Nonspecific absorption and spectral, ionization, chemical, and physical interferences are discussed. The precision and accuracy of the analytical measurements are defined. Advantages and disadvantages of the method are mentioned. The apparatus needed for sampling is described and the equipment and supplies needed for AAS are listed. Specifications for the analytical reagents used are presented. The chronological steps to be taken in the procedure are described. The method for cleaning the equipment before starting is given. The way to collect samples and package them for shipping is described. Preparation of the collected samples for analysis and their analysis by AAS are discussed. Instrument calibration and standard solutions are considered. The preparation of ionization and chemical interference suppressants and standard metal solutions is described.
