Description:Sixteen available models of miners' caps were evaluated and 13 were found to be in compliance with the performance requirements of the ANSI Z89 standards. All the models passed the flammability and penetration resistance tests. One model failed to satisfy the impact resistance requirements and 2 models did not satisfy the insulation resistance requirements of the standards. The 3 models that did not satisfy the performance requirements apparently failed because of quality control problems during manufacture. Recommendations are made for stricter quality assurance programs to prevent recurrences of the problems noted. [Description provided by NIOSH]
