  Points brought out in this brief overview of the role of the occupational health nurse include the note that the nurse is often the essential coordinator of the plant's safety and health program in all except job title. The nurse usually makes the first level diagnosis in handling injury and illness. Responsibility for prevention of disease and maintenance of worker health involves coordination with the physician, the safety director, the industrial hygienist and medical specialists in planning and conducting an in- plant walk-through survey.
