Description:An analytical method is presented for the determination of parathion (56382) in air. Parathion is trapped in ethylene-glycol contained in an impinger. The ethylene-glycol solution is diluted with water and extracted with hexane. The resulting hexane solution is concentrated and subjected to gas chromatographic analysis using a phosphorus flame photometric detector. The linear range of the flame photometric detector is 0.5 nanograms to 25 nanograms of parathion. For a 50 liter air sample, carried through to solution in 1 milliliter of hexane, 2 microliters of which is injected into gas chromatograph, this is 5 to 250 micrograms per cubic meter. Phosphorus compounds having retention times close to that of parathion will interfere with the analysis. The equipment used must be scrupulously cleaned to remove any traces of phosphate detergents.
