Description:The priorities of personal problems are discussed, with general strategies for effecting change. The personal problem areas include the workaholic, burnout, family problems, alcoholism, physical problems, psychological problems, female and minority officers problems, retirement problems, suicide, and career uncertainty. The potential methods for reducing and preventing personal problems of police officers include administrative training, comprehensive long- term personnel plans, mid-management training, involvement of the police officer organization, career development alternatives, psychological services, involvement of spouses, career counselling, and phased retirement programs. Lack of data on both personal problems and cures is the first problem to be overcome. [Description provided by NIOSH]
