Description:Police work is considered to be stressful. Occupational stress conditions which are generally correlated with coronary disease are identified as they occur in police work. The person-role fit is discussed, and a number of programs are described which attempt to improve the person-role fit or alleviate problems after they occur. Studies are under way to assess the relationships between individual characteristics, job satisfaction and the person-role fit, with the aim of improving job placement techniques. Other studies include relationships between personality attributes and job performance, performance and background, all aimed at reducing work-induced stress in police officers.
