Description:A coal-quinoline slurry is treated with ultrasonic irradiation at ambient temperature. The slurry consists of 10-40 wt pct coal, which is pulverized to a particle size approximately 44-595 micrometers. The quinoline is removed from the solubilized coal fraction by conversion to a water-soluble salt. Radiation frequencies of 30-90 khz are used with 0.5 W/cm2 power. Extending the irradiation time increases the percent of coal solubilized. The solubilized fraction may be used to produce gasoline, aromatic chemicals, carbon black, electrode carbon, and fuels having low sulfur and ash contents for power plants.
