Description:Computer models for simulating the construction and for calculating the properties of particulate solids in random two- and three- dimensional systems (coverings and packings, respectively) were developed for many different distributions of sizes. The statistical geometry of loose random coverings and packings was studied and several new interpretations of the area-coverings or space-filling requirements in these systems were made. A unique method for predicting the geometrical properties of loose random packings was developed that did not require the simulation of the assembled packing. Instead, the simplicial tetrahedra in any packing were predictable and were used to predict most of the properties of that packing. A review of the packing literature is included.
