Description:The purpose of this report is to review published information on synthetic berlinite (AlPO4), and to suggest experimental conditions requisite for its production. The Bureau of Mines' interest in berlinite relates to the Bureau's mission to help ensure that the United States has an adequate supply of mineral-based materials. Berlinite is a piezoelectric material with potential use as a substitute for quartz in the crystal oscillators which are components of electronic and electroacoustic equipment. Information gathered here (mostly from published sources) includes historical background, physical properties, end-use applications, criteria of quality, and physico-chemical factors involved in berlinite crystal growth.
