Description:This report deals with an industrial engineering study of current practices of pillar extraction in underground coal mines using the room-and-pillar mining method. A statistical analysis of accident data was performed to identify the factors associated with the fatal accidents that occurred in pillar mining, and a comprehensive review and comparison of various pillar extraction methods with respect to safety and productivity criteria was conducted. Field studies of pillar robbing operations were also conducted in selected coal mines. Several recommendations for improvement in current practices as well as future research in pillar extraction techniques are presented. [Description provided by NIOSH]
