Description:Gaseous and particulate exhaust emissions from 20 diesel engines in service at 5 underground mines were measured with high-accuracy instrumentation. The engines were checked for faults or maladjustments. The vehicle and engine maintenance organization was studied at each mine and an idealized maintenance program was devised. Faults were induced in a new diesel engine to determine their effect on the characteristics of the exhaust emissions. The results, conclusions, and recommendations for this investigation are presented in Volume I. [Description provided by NIOSH]
