Description:The purpose of this investigation was to develop a large-scale laboratory burner that could be used to effectively study coal dust combustion and to use this burner to study the relative efficacy of various solid and gaseous suppressants and the mechanism of combustion of a typical bituminous coal. The ultimate application of this better understanding will be directed toward a better understanding of the processes that lead to disastrous coal dust explosions in coal mines.
