  An overall summary and individual reports from 19 workshops that were conducted to identify and rank mining research and development needs are presented in this two-volume report. At 11 workshops a summary of current Bureau of Mines research and development was presented, and the attendees were asked to present their ideas on which research and development programs should be undertaken to meet their needs locally. Participants included representatives of federal and state agencies, educational institutions, mining companies, and equipment companies. The workshops covered in this report include lead mining in Missouri; limestone mining, surface and underground coal mining in the Midwest and the Rocky Mountain area; iron mining in Minnesota; two top-management meetings on institutional problems; and finally, a special 2-day meeting on roof control. The need for better education and training of personnel in the industry was emphasized for all workshops. The federal Bureau of Mines is the logical government unit to be an advocate of the mining industry in the United States. [Description provided by NIOSH]
