Description:The Bureau of Mines contracted a study to estimate what effects the underground mining of thick coal seams in the western United States would have on the surrounding water resources. Potential coal fields where this type of mining might occur were identified. Foreign literature was searched for studies of effects on hydrology from thick seam underground coal mining. Based on limited information obtained from the literature, estimates of the effects of this type of mining on the ground and surface water in the Western States were made.
