Description:The low profile, fresnel lens, blind area viewer (bav) developed for use on large haulage vehicles in open pit mines was evaluated to determine the bav's adaptability to the underground environment. The safety potential was verified at two test mines where operators found the bav useful in observing well-lighted objects in otherwise normally blind areas, although limited clearance for large vehicles in some areas caused damage problems. The limited vehicular traffic in the underground mines did not emphasize the inherent value or cost effectiveness of the bav on underground haulage as it did on large vehicles in open pit mines.
