Description:The objective of this study was to develop conceptual designs for a fully automated longwall mining system. The study was divided into three phases. Phase I included a survey and pertinent characteristics of all longwall faces operating in the United States. It includes the results of time and motion studies conducted at the face in an operating mine, it identifies the causes of production slowdowns or stoppages, and it identifies areas for improvement in longwall mining systems.
