Description:This study assesses whether Narragansett Basin coal deposits could be developed commercially in the near future. To accomplish this, the potential market for the coal was identified, the price users would be willing to pay for Narragansett coal was assessed, and this price was compared with the expected costs of producing the coal. The study concluded that the major market, New England utilities, could burn bituminous coal from Pennsylvania or West Virginia at a lower total cost than Narragansett Basin coal, assuming expected mining conditions and emission policies. Therefore, the study concluded that Narragansett Basin coal resources could not be developed economically in the next 10 years. [Description provided by NIOSH]
