  A comprehensive survey of materials problems associated with welding in the mining industry was performed for the Bureau of Mines. The survey, which involved mine visits and questionnaires, showed that a complex combination of alloys was used to fabricate and repair mining equipment and that a more basic understanding of the metallurgy and welding procedures was needed. This investigation has determined, characterized, and documented present welding metallurgy and technology in anticipation of research and development programs that can be established to produce more suitable welding processes, equipment, materials, and procedures.
