Description:Worker exposures to dust, smoke and gas were surveyed at the American Foundry and Machine Company in Salt Lake City, on January 24 to February 3, 1964. Air samples were collected and analyzed for silica (7631869), irritant gases, smoke, and carbon-monoxide (630080). Silica dust counts were below the calculated threshold limit value (TLV). Irritant gases calculated as formaldehyde (50000) ranged from 1.4 to 8.3 parts per million (ppm). The benzene soluble portion of the smoke sample was 1.96 milligrams per cubic meter or 30 percent of the total sample. Carbon-monoxide concentrations ranged from trace to 150ppm; the maximum permissible concentration for an 8 hour exposure is 100ppm. The authors conclude that exposures to dust, smoke and gases can be reduced in several areas. They recommend a housekeeping plan to prevent redispersion of dust, improvement of local and general ventilation and exhaust systems, and reduction of atmospheric concentrations of dust in the sand preparation operation.
