Industrywide Studies Report: A Walk-Through Survey of Kendall Company, Augusta Facility, Augusta, Georgia

  A walk through survey was conducted at Kendall Company (SIC-3842), Augusta, Georgia in February, 1984. The purpose of the survey was to determine the feasibility of including the facility in a NIOSH industry wide mortality and industrial hygiene study of ethylene- oxide (75218). The company produced medical supplies such as gauze pads, sponges, cotton balls, and trays that were sterilized with ethylene-oxide. Fill and dip and chamber sterilization processes were utilized. The facility had approximately 620 employees, of which about 70 percent were female. A review of the personnel records showed that the facility could contribute 19,300 person/years to the NIOSH study. Company air monitoring data showed that all employees were potentially exposed to ethylene-oxide between 1968 and 1983. Starting in 1983, pre employment physical examinations were given. The authors conclude that the facility should be included in the NIOSH study. Recommendations include continuing the industrial hygiene monitoring program for ethylene- oxide, conducting investigations of the ventilation systems, and keeping bond openings in fill and dip operations free from obstruction by boxes and bags.
