  A walk through survey was conducted at the Cincinnati Chemical Processing Company, Batavia, Ohio where blending, grinding, spray drying, and packaging of various chemicals took place. Specific attention in this survey was given to the potential exposure to polybrominated-biphenyls (59536651) possible at this facility and to the evaluation of any possible associated health effects. PBB production began in 1971 as part of a fire retardant program. A total of three employees worked for 9 months preparing about 140,000 pounds of PBB. Employees were observed using respirators, particularly when involved in emptying containers or operating grinders. At this facility dermatitis had been a recurring occupational health problem. The authors recommend that the current local exhaust system be modified to include properly designed shrouds at the rear and front of packaging hoppers to control dust exposure, that hearing protective devices be required when the noise levels exceed 90 decibels-A, that a respiratory protective program be established, that NIOSH certified respirators approved for such operations be substituted for current respirators, that a formalized occupational safety and health program be established to combat dermatitis, that good housekeeping practices be encouraged, that containers in the storage area be stacked straight to prevent falling, and that acceptable safety helmets be provided.
