Description:A walk through survey was conducted at Dow Chemical USA (SIC-2821), Freeport, Texas in May, 1985. The purpose of the survey was to obtain information on its styrene (100425) butadiene (106990) (SB) latex production process and to evaluate the potential for exposure to 1,3-butadiene. Bulk SB latex samples were analyzed for residual 1,3-butadiene. The facility produced SB latex by a styrene/1,3- butadiene/carboxylic-acid emulsion polymerization process. Engineering controls included monitoring unloading of 1,3-butadiene from rail tank cars by sealed magnetic gauges, dual mechanical seals on all 1,3-butadiene pumps and on the agitators in the reactors, and local exhaust ventilation in the quality control laboratory. No 1,3- butadiene was detected in the bulk SB latex samples. Company industrial hygiene monitoring data showed mean 1,3-butadiene exposures for each job category to be less than 1.5 parts per million. Twelve employees worked in the SB latex production area. All employees were given pre placement physicals. Required personal protective equipment included fire retardant clothing, safety glasses, hard hats, and full face respiratory protection. The authors conclude that an in depth survey should be conducted at the facility. [Description provided by NIOSH]
