• Description:
  Peripheral neuropathy among workers at the Borden Chemical Company's Columbus Coated Fabrics Division (SIC-2295) in Columbus, Ohio, was investigated by the Ohio Department of Public Health and NIOSH on September 11, 1973. Medical and neurological examinations revealed that approximately 49 workers had peripheral neuropathy, with 35 of these workers employed in print shop areas. Environmental measurements indicated that methyl-butyl-ketone (591786) (MBK) and methyl-ethyl-ketone (78933), (MEK) exceeded safe limits in the print shop areas. The most common symptom among those with peripheral neuropathy was general weakness usually in the distal muscles of the arms and legs. Several recommendations were made by the examining physicians, including discontinuing the use of MBK, use of respirators among print shop workers, chemical analyses of all chemicals in use at the company, institution of a medical monitoring program, and observance of industrial and personal hygienic practices.
