Description:Worker exposures to fluorotrichloromethane (75694) (F-11), dichlorodifluoromethane (75718) (F-12), methylene-chloride (75092), trichloroethylene (79016), perchloroethylene (127184) and 1,1,1- trichloroethane (71556) were surveyed at Virginia Chemicals Incorporated (SIC-2869) in Portsmouth, Virginia, on September 28 and 29, 1976. The facility produced spray insecticides, spray and liquid solvents and refrigerant gas. A local physician provided medical service, but there was no industrial hygiene program. The company employed 23 workers. Air samples were collected by adsorption on charcoal and were analyzed by gas chromatography. OSHA standards for F-11, F-12, methylene-chloride, 1,1,1- trichloroethane, perchloroethylene and trichloroethylene were 1000, 1000, 100, 350, 100 and 100 parts per million (ppm), respectively. Corresponding concentrations of these substances found in the air samples ranged from 0.7 to 15.5, 6.2 to 53.9, 5.6 to 14.0, 0.9 to 10.2, 0.2 to 0.7 and 2.0 to 5.1ppm. The author concludes that existing control efforts at this facility are effective and should be maintained. [Description provided by NIOSH]
