Preliminary industrial hygiene survey of Porter-Guertin Company, Cincinnati, Ohio.

  Worker exposures to chromium-trioxide (1333820) were surveyed at Porter Guertin Company (SIC-3471) in Cincinnati, Ohio, on November 28, 1973. Three personal and seven area air samples were collected within the hard chrome plating area along with surface wipe samples. Ventilation measurements also were made. Chromium-trioxide concentrations in all air samples were below the OSHA standard of tables, rubber gloves, hand racks and workers' fingertips contained measurable but unspecified amounts of chromium-VI (18540299). Surfaces in offices and restrooms also were contaminated with small amounts of chromium-VI. Ventilation rates ranged from 400 to 1300 feet per minute, and leaks were found in ducts around the periphery of the plating tanks. The author notes that good industrial and personal hygiene practices are needed to prevent chromium induced nasal lesions. Implementation of appropriate safety, industrial and medical programs is recommended. [Description provided by NIOSH]
